“Prima, baby…you have a guest.” Madi murmured.

The room that kept her was glamorous. A nested modishness of serenity and invincibility that would hug and gracefully hold any ordinary guest of the Mondrian. It was a mother’s loving attempt to console her daughter with mild distraction and a tender imagination. Allowing her a place to mourn within a sphere of softness, without surrendering the style and sophistication that PrimaDonna had been accustomed to.

It was a caring gesture that might’ve worked for some. But an effort that was currently lost on an ailing Prima, as her stretched-out body slinked weakly across the oversized day bed, like a newly wilted corpse.

There was no response, as we walked past warm-white, cashmere sofas and high-backed chairs kindled by whimsical collections of crystal chandeliers that hung strewn over the dining room table, with halos that danced like protectant angels.

She didn’t even stir, as I placed a bouquet of glass-vased flowers softly onto the table and sighed quietly under the hovering lights.

Prima appeared lifeless, drained of all vibrancy and color. And the emptiness that she felt began to seep into my soul.

I breathed deeply and swept aside the draped bronze of transparent satin, which whished as I walked into her presence. And I felt the abyss of her pain immediately, as I sat beside her felled spirit.

“I’m sorry for your loss, Prima. You have my condolences, baby girl.” I articulated gently, as I began to stroke her dark, matted hair in consolation.

She would not rouse, but I continued diligently to kindle and spread the warmth of the love within me.

“They…” She forced open squinted lids to blankly stare through swollen, red-glazed eyes and whispered. “They took…my husband from me, Silk…”

“It’ll be okay, Prima. We’re all here for you.”

“My child will be born without a father…My child will grow without a…”

The breathless undertone trailed, as though her worst nightmare had become a mindless reality that would haunt her for nights to come. She’d been running from a specter that had exacted its torment and had stolen the central nerve of her living verve. She’d died inside. And for the moment had no more will to give.

“But his spirit will continue with the life that grows inside of you. Prima, you must be strong…you must live…for the baby.”

She turned her head slowly, to look at me squarely, as though something had finally registered. And a single tear ran a familiar trail of her wrought and pallid face, as I looked into her eyes with a genuine love and solace.

“…For the baby, Prima.”

I wiped away her tear and caressed her hair gently, as a splinter of life began to show itself.

She began to sob. And I took her into my arms and rocked her trembling body. I gave freely of my own life force, if only to relieve her for the moment and to increment the shard of hope that she chose to cling to.

“And believe me, Prima, they will suffer for your grief.”

I soothed solidly, as she shook and wept her release.
